XZ is a file compression format using the LZMA algorithm. To use on Ubuntu, you need to install xz-utils.
Installation:
sudo apt-get install xz-utils
Unpacking:
tar -xpjf archive.tar.xz

In the future, in order not to take care of what type of archive, you can put the Atool utility:
$ sudo apt-get install atool
for unpacking (show on the examples):
$ aunpack a.7z
$ aunpack a.tag.gz.
$ aunpack a.zip.
For archiving:
$ apack a.7z file1.txt file2 dir1
To view the contents:
$ als a.7z
et al.

There is a universal solution.
In all popular distributions of the operating system GNU / Linux , there is a package dtrx (“do the right extraction”). When it is installed on the dependences, the unpackurser missing in the system will be installed.
The program independently determines what is inside the file, and knows how to unpack TAR, ZIP (including self-extracting .exe), CPIO, RPM, DEB, GEM, 7Z, CAB, RAR, files created by InstallShield, compressed Gzip, BZIP2, LZMA and compress.
If within the archive of other archives / compressed files within the archive, the program is interactively proposed to unpack them.
Usage:
$ dtrx compressed. File. and
